Insuring your touring caravan is not a legal requirement in the UK, generally most of the car insurance policies cover you to tow a trailer on your policy on a third party basis. But, this does not cover the cost of repairing caused to your caravan in an accident. Even it will not replace your caravan that has stolen or damaged by fire.
There are lots of insurance companies that are offering caravan insurance, but policy benefits vary from company to company. It is therefore, considered important to contact several companies and check with each individual insurer what is included in the cover before taking out a policy.
There are basically two types of caravan:
Turing caravan
Static caravan
The touring caravan is towed behind a vehicle and allowers the Vanner to travel far and wide availing of camping and caravanning sites throughout the UK and Europe. While the static caravan is usually a semi-permanent pitch on a caravan site typically serviced with electricity, water and sewers.
When it comes to insurance both types of caravans require different types of insurance policy to cover different types of risks. For example the touring caravan is concerned with the risks of the road including collisions with vehicles and accidents caused by side winds or due to incorrect loading. While static caravan is related with the risks that are concerned with the nature including flooding of the site and falling trees. There is, however, one insurance risk common to both and that is the risk of caravan theft.
