Cutting The Cost Of Motoring
by G Taylor
Dated: 01/09/2008
Fuel is one resource the world cannot move on without.  So said, we all know that it is also one resource that is burnt away carelessly knowing still that not an ounce of it can be regenerated.  It is a nonrenewable energy form so to see that future generations also enjoy its benefits we need to conserve it.  We also need to 'Go Green' and look after the planet.  In all of that wasn't enough, with the rising costs of fuel, we really need to conserve as much as we can.

Fuel Saving Tips

Keep your vehicle's tyres well inflated.  A deflation of 2 PSI in a tyre can rise fuel consumption by 1%.  Thin tyres can also save fuel.

• Change your driving habits.  Drive at a moderate speed and avoid sharp acceleration and braking suddenly.  Good traffic sense and anticipation can help too - no need to brake or accelerate unecessarily

• Check your air filter.  It needs to be cleaned regularly and replaced if badly clogged

• Excessive reving of your engine should be avoided

• Drive in a high gear.  Change your gears swiftly and reach the optimum gear to optimise fuel efficiency.

• Remove any excess weight from your vehicle.  Travelling with an empty boot can improve fuel efficiency

• Consider closing windows.  Driving with the windows open can increase fuel consumption

• Switch off the engine when not in use.  Why have your engine ticking over unecessarily?

• Keep the use of air con to a minimum.  Using it sparingly can conserve fuel by up to 10%

By keeping your vehicle ship shape you can seriously reduce your fuel costs.  Check you engine, battery, tyre pressure and air filters on a periodical basis.  Service your vehicle regularly and use filling stations that use good quality fuel.
